Cardinals Go Undefeated in the Clarion Tournament

Clarion, Penn. – The SVSU Volleyball team swept day two of the Clarion Tournament, taking game one 3-1 over the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats and 3-1 in game two over the Bellarmine Knights.

The Cardinals were undefeated, 4-0, in the Clarion Tournament and were led by senior Sarah Tabit who earned Tournament MVP and a spot on the All-Tournament team averaging 14 kills per match and recording 56 kills total kills in tournament play.  Tabit also had a match high hitting percentage (.478) against Bellarmine, a hitting percentage of .300 over the four matches, and recorded six assists in the tournament. Tabit was also a key player on the Cardinals defense recording 22 digs, four solo blocks, and six block assists over the four matches. 

Game One: SVSU 3 - Pitt-Johnstown 1

The Cardinals struggled offensively in the first set, which led to a 25-21 loss to the Mountain Cats. Sets two and three went to SVSU as they shook of the nerves from the first set, winning 25-17 and 25-18, respectively. Set four was a nail biter but the Cardinals came through with a 25-23 win over the Mountain Cats.

  • Emily Friesl recorded 15 kills, 4 digs, and 2 block assists earning "Player of the Match" honors
  • Sarah Tabit led the Cardinals in kills (17) and solo blocks (3) while also earning 9 digs and 2 assists 
  • Hannah Tabit led the team in assists with 47 and recorded 10 digs and 6 kills
  • Abbie Toland led the Cardinals in digs with 26 in the libero position

"We started a bit slow and didn't get any offensive momentum until late in set one, but then started to figure them out and got rolling as the match went on."

Game Two: SVSU 3 - Bellarmine 0

The Cardinals started the second match firing on all cylinders, winning all three sets in consecutive fashion: 25-23, 25-21, and 25-17. Two Cardinals, Sarah Tabit and Emily Friesl, earned All-Tournament Team and Tabit was named Tournament MVP.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sarah Tabit recorded 15 kills and 2 blocks good for "Player of the Match" honors to lead the charge in the second contest. 
  • Emily Friesl earned 9 kills and 4 blocks while also earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team after a great weekend of play.
  • Hannah Tabit led the team in assists with 35 and recorded 5 digs

"We started pretty strong for a change and were able to dictate the pace a bit more. Not having to play from behind gave us a bit more energy. Our serving was strong and our defense contributed quite a bit more today than yesterday."
