UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team got back on track Sunday (10/10) with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Lake Erie College Storm. The victory improves the Cardinals to 7-8 overall on the season and 5-6 in the GLIAC while the Storm fall to 3-15 overall and 0-11 in league play.
SVSU took both of the first two sets by a 25-18 count and ended the match with a 25-12 win in the third and final frame.
The Cardinals were led by Chili's "Player of the Match" Laurel Mattson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood HS), who recorded a match-high 10 digs from the libero position in the contest. Annie Buxton (Aurora, Ont./Aurora SS) had a match-high 10 kills, five blocks and a pair of aces. Katie Maciejewski (Laingsburg, Mich.) had nine kills for SVSU, while Becky Schroeder (Owosso, Mich.) added eight while hitting .400. Sam Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) had 23 assists in two sets played while Nicole Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich.) added eight.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday (10/15) and Saturday (10/16), as they will travel to Aurora, Illinois to compete in the 2010 GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Challenge, a tournament in its third year of existence.
* - The win over Lake Erie marked the 100th-career victory for Will Stanton, who is in his eighth season as the Cardinal Volleyball Head Coach.
