UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team rounded-out a weekend trio of matches with a solid 7-2 home victory over Tiffin University on Sunday at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Cardinals, despite dropping two of the three doubles matches, swept through the singles slate of matches to post the victory.

The win over the Dragons was the first for the Cards since a 6-3 victory in the 2012 season.

Saginaw Valley got a victory at the No. 2 spot, as Danielle Slonac and Maddie Miller registered an 8-4 victory over their Dragon opponents. At the No. 1 position, Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin dropped a tight 8-6 match while Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell fell by an 8-5 count at No. 3.

The Cardinals came to play in singles, coming out on top at all six spots, fighting through several close matches to close-out for the 7-2 win.

  • McLaughlin got it started for SV, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win at her No. 4 spot.
  • Miller finished next, giving the Cards a 3-2 overall edge after she was tied at 1 set-apiece when her opponent retired due to injury. She won the second set 6-4 after falling in the first 3-6.
  • Slonac was victorious at No. 5 singles, fighting through a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker win in set one before claiming the second frame 6-2.
  • Donahue was the deciding factor at No. 1 singles, giving SVSU the fifth point after winning her match in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Gao claimed her No. 3 singles contest in another tough matchup, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
  • Campbell had a handful in her victory at No. 6 singles too, as she won the first by a score of 6-4 before dropping the second by a 6-7 (3) tiebreak. She then continued on and posted a 10-8 win in the third and final set, rounding-out play for the home squad.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"I'm going to have to come up with a new word besides proud. It just doesn't even come close to capturing the significance of what our team accomplished together today. After two long days of tennis, to come out today and compete the way we did against a team like Tiffin is so impressive. They finished 2nd in the conference last season and we have not beaten them in at least 5 years."

"In doubles we came out well and really could have taken all 3 courts. Two of them we let get away from us which we knew meant a tall order needing 4 singles point to win. What happened after that was the most amazing display of fight, energy, and focus that I have ever witnessed on all 6 courts. Nothing came easy at all, but we dug just a little deeper than the opponent and it made all the difference. We fought for every last point and swept the singles courts 6-0. That was so huge and I have seen a new level from this Cardinal team. We also got a fitting birthday win for our freshman Maya Campbell who had a gutsy singles win to end the day."

"We are so excited to take on the next chapter versus Northwood on Saturday for Senior Day. Hope everyone can come out to help us keep the momentum rolling."

Up Next...

The Cards host Northwood University on Saturday (Oct. 14) in the team's final home match of the 2017 fall season. It will be senior day as well, as the program will honor Shea Donahue and Danielle Slonac prior to play.
