Big second half pushes SVSU to 66-52 victory over LSSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Using a strong second half performance, the Cardinal Women's Basketball team registered a 66-52 home victory over Lake Superior State University on Saturday afternoon at SVSU's O'Neill Arena.

After trailing 24-22 at the half, the Cardinals outscored the Lakers by a 44-28 margin the rest of the way to secure the 14-point win.

LSSU outscored Saginaw Valley 17-7 in the first quarter but a 15-7 advantage for the Cardinals in the second quarter drew the score nearer at 24-22 at halftime. Maddie Barrie and Kaitlyn Geers each posted five points in the quarter. 

The Cards poured-in 23 points in the third frame, holding the Lakers to just 15 to take a 45-39 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter. Hannah Settingsgaard went-off in the third, notching 14 points for the Cards while Maddie Maloney added five.

SVSU went for over 20 points in the fourth as well, posting a 21-13 edge in the fourth to seal the 66-52 win. Maloney netted nine more points in the fourth and Geers another eight. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Settingsgaard got a game-high 18 points, adding five rebounds, three blocks and an assist. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Maloney added 17 points for the Cardinals with four assists and two boards.
  • Geers scored a season-high 13 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds.
  • Aaliah Hill added 10 boards to help lead Saginaw Valley to a 41-35 edge on the glass.

The Cards hit the road for a pair of GLIAC games in the U.P. this upcoming weekend. The trip begins on Thursday (Feb. 7) at Northern Michigan University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Marquette versus the Wildcats.
