UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI – The Saginaw Valley State Women's Basketball team has announced its 2015 recruiting class, as five prep standouts have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at SVSU. These five players reside in Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan.
This year's recruiting class features Anna Hall (Stow, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit), Tori Lennartz (Fort Recovery, Ohio / Fort Recovery), Halee Nieman (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek), Kassy Nelson (Tuston, Mich. / Pine River) and Hannah Settingsgaard (Oak Creek, Wis. / Oak Creek).
"It is with great excitement that we announce these five student-athletes as the latest additions to the SVSU women's basketball program. All five of them address positions of need, are highly skilled and will bring an immense amount of energy and competitiveness to the current roster. Each one will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact on the floor their freshman year." – SVSU Women's Basketball Head Coach Jamie Pewinski
2015 SVSU Women's Basketball Recruiting Class
Anna Hall – 5'8" – Guard, Walsh Jesuit H.S., Stow, Ohio
Hall prepped at Walsh Jesuit High School under Head Coach Pete Zaccari. She is the all-time leading scorer at the school, as she was named First Team North Coast League in both her junior and senior seasons. Hall was tabbed the North Coast League MVP, Tri County "Player of the Year," MVP of the Tri County All-Star Game and the District 3 "Player of the Year." The team captain earned Second Team All-Ohio honors as well.
"Anna was a late addition to this class, but she was definitely the missing piece needed to complete the class. She plays fast and with passion. Anna is extremely humble and will do whatever it takes to win. She has a knack for scoring and getting to the line, but ultimately she is a competitor that strives to get better and to make her teammates better." – Coach Pewinski
Tori Lennartz – 5'11" – Forward, Fort Recovery H.S., Fort Recovery, Ohio
Lennartz prepped at Fort Recovery High School under Head Coach Brian Patch. She was chosen First Team All-MAC, Second Team All-District and All-Northwest District all three years she lettered on the varsity team. Lennartz is a member of the Dayton Lady Hoopstars AAU program that won the Ohio State Championship in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
"Tori is going to be one of the players we use to fill the shoes of Sam Zirzow. Tori has played everything from point guard to post for Fort Recovery and we love the versatility that she brings. She has really improved throughout her senior year and we think she is just starting to come into her own as a basketball player." – Coach Pewinski
Halee Nieman – 5'11" – Forward, Bullock Creek H.S., Midland, Mich.
Nieman prepped at Bullock Creek High School under Head Coach Justin Freeland. She was named First Team All-State and First Team All-Tri Valley Conference Central Division. Nieman was also named to the Midland Daily News and Saginaw News Dream Teams. Along with those honors, she earned Midland Daily News "Player of the Year" plaudits. Nieman was a part of three-straight AAU State Championship teams as a member of the MI FastBreak program as well.
"Halee has had arguably one of the best high school careers of anyone in the state of Michigan. Her team was all about winning and, while Halee could have put up bigger stats at times, she was not concerned with anything but the victory. She played inside a lot in high school, but we will mostly use her on the perimeter. Halee will be the junkyard dog of the group and I mean that as one of the best compliments that I can give!" – Coach Pewinski
Kassy Nelson – 5'7" – Guard, Pine River H.S., Tustin, Mich.
Nelson prepped at Pine River High School under Head Coach Shawn Ruppert. She earned All-State honors her sophomore, junior and senior years, being named the "Player of the Year" in her senior campaign. Kassy was named to the Pioneer All-Area Team four times, as well as garnering four all-conference awards. She was selected as the BCAM's Best three-point shooter in 2014-15. Nelson is a member of the Michigan Elite Basketball program and has been selected Academic All-State as well, ranking #1 in her class with a 4.0 GPA.
"Kassy is one of the better shooters we watched all summer and she proved it by winning the 3-point contest at the Breslin during the State Championships. But her game grew a lot during her senior season as she needed to carry the load for her team. She competes hard and isn't afraid to mix it up for rebounds or get in the paint when she has to. Her skill set is perfect for the system that we run." – Coach Pewinski
Hannah Settingsgaard – 5'9" – Guard, Oak Creek H.S., Oak Creek, Wis.
Settingsgaard played her high school basketball at Oak Creek High School under Head Coach Steve Hluchnik. She led her team to the 2014 state championship her junior season. Settingsgaard was named the Southeast Conference "Player of the Year" in her senior campaign, as well as to the All-Suburban Team and Team MVP. She was listed as one of the top-50 players in the state and one of the top-five defenders in the state. Settingsgaard is part of the WI WBA Prestige program, a team that has compiled a record of 178-33 (.844) during her career with them.
"Hannah has been successful in high school and in AAU and we like that winning mentality that she brings. She is a great defender at the high school level and her size and mentality on that end of the floor is going to set her apart from some other players at this level. She continues to grow on the offensive end of the floor, but it's all the intangibles that made us love Hannah's game." – Coach Pewinski
