ELYRIA, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program moved up to fourth place after a +4 second round 292 at the 2012 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships today (Oct. 15) held at Elyria Country Club. SVSU now sits ten shots behind Tiffin in the team competition heading into the final round on Tuesday.
The Cardinals were led on day two by sophomore Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich. / Home school) who birdied five of his last six holes to finish with a two-under-par round of 70. Skidmore is tied for sixth after 36 holes at two-over-par, six shots behind the leader.
Fellow sophomore Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich.) rebounded on Monday with a one-over-par 71 in the second round as he came home with a strong back nine of even-par 36 to finish his round. Drost sits in a tie for 23rd heading into the final round.
Junior Eric Gandy (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek HS) also excelled on the back nine as he posted a one-under-par 35 coming in to finish with a 74 (+2) on day two. Gandy bogeyed the 18th hole to finish in a tie for 23rd along with Drost.
Senior Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich. / Western HS) backed up a first round 76 (+4) with a second round of 75 (+3) to slide into a tie for 16th place. Vogl struggled in the middle portion of his round before making birdies on two of his final three holes to move up the leaderboard.
The Saginaw Valley lineup was rounded out by Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) whose round was derailed by a triple bogey on the 411-yard 17th hole and a bogey at the last to finish with a 78 (+6). Hansen is currently in a tie for 46th after 36 holes.
The Cardinals return to Elyria Country Club tomorrow (Oct. 16) morning as they attempt to make a late charge up the leaderboard in the final round.
