ELYRIA, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program is currently in fifth place after the first round of the 2012 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships today. The Cardinals posted a +21 round of 309 at the Ashland University-hosted event held at the nearby Elyria Country Club. SVSU sits six shots behind the first round leaders Tiffin and Ashland at 303 (+15).
The Cardinals were led by senior Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich. / Western HS) and sophomore Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich. / Home school) who each carded +4 rounds of 76 and sit tied for 15th. Vogl's day was highlighted by a one-under-par 35 on his back nine, while Skidmore went out in 36 to start his first round. Dustin and Micah both posted four birdies a piece on day one.
Junior Eric Gandy (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek HS), playing in the No. 1 spot for SVSU, was unable to avoid the big numbers early in his first round as he made three double bogeys on the day. Gandy recorded a first round 78 (+6) as he posted identical nines of 39 to finish in a tie for 26th place.
The Saginaw Valley lineup was rounded out by Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) and Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich.) as they both finished the day with 7-over-par rounds of 79. Hansen and Drost are currently tied in 32nd position as they look to improve in round two tomorrow (Oct. 15).
The Cardinals will have two more days (Monday and Tuesday) to move up the leaderboard as they work towards a conference title.
