Saginaw Valley splits on day one at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cardinal Baseball squad continued on the road Thursday (Mar. 7) and faced Trevecca Nazarene University in a regional doubleheader. After taking the opener by a 4-1 count, SVSU dropped the nightcap by a narrow 7-6 score and the teams split.

Game 1

The Cards got on the board in the top of the 2nd inning when Joshua Riggs belted a solo home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Jordan Swiss got into the action in the top of the 4th, leading-off the frame with a solo shot of his own to make the Saginaw Valley lead 2-0.

In the visitor half of the 5th, the Cardinals had Gerrit Eding come through with a bases-loaded single that plated Derrek Clyde and Andrew Burke for the 4-0 lead over Trevecca.

The only run the Trojans would put across came in the bottom of the 8th and the Cardinals would eventually win by the 4-1 final.

Swiss went 3-5 at the plate with a home run. Riggs had his solo home run for his second of the year while Eding added the two-RBI base hit. Clyde finished with two hits and a run scored and Burke walked three times and scored once.

In the top of the 3rd, however, Saginaw Valley added another pair to knot the score at 3-3. Eding scored Clyde on an RBI groundout and Collin Winters would later score on a double steal for the second run.

The Trojans added another three runs in the bottom of the 3rd, taking a 6-3 lead over the Cardinals.

In the visitor half of the 5th, Eding would again come through with an RBI on an infield single to plate Clyde, making the score 6-4. In the top of the 8th, Anthony Kania came through with an RBI double that scored Wilson to make the Trojan lead just one at 6-5 headed into the 9th inning.

The top of the 9th saw the visitors work to get on the bases once again and Wilson came through with a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Clyde to tie the game at 6-6.

Trevecca scored an unearned run in the home half of the 9th, however, as the Cardinals committed three errors and the Trojans came away with the 7-6 victory.
