SVSU Baseball registers big 22-3 victory at McKendree

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Cardinal Baseball team evened up its weekend series at McKendree at 1-1 after posting a big 22-3 victory over the Bearcats on Saturday night. SVSU scored a seven spot in the first and third innings, helping put them out front by a big count and it would not look back in securing the first win of the season.

A seven-run 1st inning gave the visitors a 7-0 lead right out of the gates, as Jacob Mansfield had a bases loaded walk that scored Derrek Clyde. He, Jordan Swiss and Collin Winters would score on an error on the next play on a ball that was put into play by Joshua Riggs. Craig Wilson Jr. would score Riggs with an infiield single and Clyde had a two-RBI single to finish the inning's scoring for SVSU.

After a Mansfield RBI pushed Swiss across in the 2nd and McKendree responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-1, another seven runs came SVSU's way to push the lead out to 15-1. Swiss, Martin Money (2), Mansfield and Riggs all had RBI for the Cards in the frame while Riggs later scored on an error and Andrew Burke a wild pitch.

A single run in the 5th, two in the 7th and RBI from Money and Riggs in the 9th that led to four runs would help the visitors close-out eventually for the 22-3 win.

Money had a huge game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and two runs while walking twice. Riggs had two hits with four RBI and a pair of runs as well. Swiss had two hits with a double, two runs and two RBI. Mansfield had a hit and three RBI for the Cardinals and two runs scored. Clyde finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, three runs and four walks. Wilson was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Clyde and Swiss each stole two bags.

On the mound, Amani Godfrey (1-1) picked up the victory after getting the start and working 5.0 innings. He allowed just two runs on seven hits, striking-out eight batters and walking three. Brandon Wise had four strikeouts in three innings of relief while Nolan Knauf and Tyler Stambaugh each had an inning of scoreless relief.
