Charleston, W.V. — The SVSU Baseball team split day one of the series against the University of Charleston (W.V.) Friday (Mar. 9) evening. In game one, the Cardinals fell to the Golden Eagles 14-3, but bounced back to take game two 10-4 over UC.
Game One: UC 14 - SVSU 3
Charleston took the first lead of the fame over SVSU in the bottom of the first, 1-0, after a sacrifice fly ball to center field with a runner on third, unearned.
The Golden Eagles then went on to post back to back homers to go up 5-0 over Saginaw Valley State.
SVSU's Quincy Jones dropped his fourth home run of the season in the top of the fourth, bringing Jordan Swiss around to trail UC by three (5-2). Charleston then responded with five runs to push the lead to 10-2.
The Golden Eagles then went on to notch four more runs to finish off the sixth inning. After a no score top of the seventh inning for SVSU, the count finalized 14-3, to then snap SVSU's eight game winning streak.
Alex Millhisler took the loss for the Cardinals, working four innings.
Game Two: SVSU 10 - UC 4
In the top of the first, Swiss singled to left field bringing Wilson home to take the lead 1-0 over the Golden Eagles.
SVSU's Clyde then went onto to a score his first homer of the year over the right field wall to go up 2-0 in the third.
The Cardinals continued on scoring, notching seven runs on nine hits to go up 9-0 over Charleston in the fourth inning.
Saginaw Valley held the Golden Eagles to no runs until the bottom of the fifth where UC scored two earned runs to trail 9-2 to the Cardinals.
Winters singled up the center field, RBI, sending Swiss home and the team to a 10-3 lead in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals held UC to another scoreless inning, keeping the seven run lead over the Golden Eagles.
Charleston responded with a two run inning in the bottom of the seventh to cut SVSU's lead to six. This would go on to be the final count of of the contest for Saginaw Valley to take the victory, 10-4, and split the series 1-1.
Amani Godfrey took the win, working six innings, striking out nine and walking two.
The SVSU Baseball team will continue with their series against the Golden Eagles tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
