SVSU Volleyball Sweeps Purdue Northwest to begin weekend action

UNIVERSITY CENTER --  The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team swept Purdue Northwest, 3-0, Friday (Oct. 11) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) play in the Hamilton Gymnasium. The Cardinals improve to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in GLIAC play and have won five in a row with four of those five games played on the road.

The first set opened as a very even contest as the Cardinals and the Pride knotted, 16-16. Saginaw Valley would only allow PNW one more point in the set as they would win, 25-17. SVSU junior, Emily Friesl, would serve the Cardinals to the remaining seven points of the set to put SVSU up, 1-0.

Saginaw Valley would take an early three point lead in the second set to lead the Pride, 8-5. PNW stepped up to the challenge of the Cardinals and went on a 6-0 run and go up on SVSU, 11-8. SVSU would go on to tie the match, 13-13, and score four in a row to take a 17-13 lead on the Pride. The Cardinals would only allow the Pride to score three more points in the set and close the set, 25-16. 

With a 2-0 lead in the match, the Cardinals would have the upperhand. SVSU opened the third set leading the Pride, 12-6. This six point deficit was too large for the Pride to overcome as SVSU closed the third and final set by a count of 25-20.

Inside the Box Score

  • Emily Friesl earned "Player of the Match" honors with a season high hitting percentage of .632 on 14 kills with only two errors. Friesl also tallied one assist, one service ace, and one block in the sweep.
  • Hannah Tabit led the Cardinals in assists with 35, recorded on service ace, and added four digs.
  • Sarah Tabit led the team in kills and digs with 15 and 13, respectively. She also added one service ace and two blocks in the win.
