UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory over Wayne State in the Cardinals' first home contest of the 2013 season.
Saginaw Valley won the first set by a score of 25-22, fending-off a stretch where Wayne State score five consecutive points to tie the score at 18-18. After that, the Cardinals notched the next seven out of 11 points to close-out with the three point victory.
Wayne State evened the match at 1-1 by taking set number two with a 25-21 margin.
The Cardinals would respond, however, and claim the third set by another 25-22 score to take a 2-1 advantage in the contest. Saginaw Valley would close-out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth to win the match by a 3-1 margin.
Senior Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) was named the Chili's "Player of the Match" following a 14 kill performance, hitting .545 on 22 attacks.
Junior Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) added 12 kills offensively and 14 digs to help out on the defensive end.
Juniors Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) and Ashley Driscoll(Bellevue, Mich./Pennfield HS) each added eight kills for SVSU while freshman Kaylee Schmitt (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) had a team-high five blocks.
With the victory, SVSU improves to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC while Wayne State falls to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow (Sept. 28), as they take-on the University of Findlay in a 2:00 pm matchup.
