UNIVERSITY CENTER -- In a matchup of unbeaten teams in the GLIAC, the SVSU Women's Tennis squad hosted Wayne State University on Friday (Oct. 7) at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Warriors claimed two of the three doubles matches and carried over to take five of the singles contests, closing out for the 7-2 win.
The highlight for the Cardinals came at the No. 1 Doubles spot, where Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin played well once again for SVSU. The duo posted an 8-5 win over their Warrior opponents, taking the lone doubles victory for SV. Danielle Slonac and Maddie Miller fell by an 8-5 count at No. 2 Doubles while Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell fell for the first time this season at No. 3 Doubles, 8-4.
Campbell registered the only singles victory for the Cardinals, claiming a 6-3, 6-0 win for the home team at the No. 6 spot. It improves her overall record for the season to 4-1. Donahue fell in three sets at the No. 1 slot, taking set one 6-2 before falling 6-4, 6-2 in sets two and three, respectively. Miller had a close contest as well. She dropped her opening set at No. 2 Singles 6-3 but bounced back for a 7-5 win in set two. She would eventually fall in an 11-9 tiebreaker in the third and final set.
The Cardinals round-out the weekend with two more league matches at home, beginning Saturday (Oct. 7) against Ashland University. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Eagles had a match at Northwood University on Friday afternoon, where they fell by a 9-0 count.
