UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU women's tennis team rounded-out its 2016 fall regular season on Sunday (Oct. 23) against Northwood University. The Cardinals would fall by a final count of 8-1 to the Timberwolves in the match at the SVSU Tennis Complex.
Northwood would take a 3-0 edge in the contest, posting a sweep in doubles play. Their no. 1 and no. 2 spots notched 8-2 wins before the no. 3 team claimed an 8-4 victory.
The Cardinals would not back down, however, and continued the fight into singles play.
The Timberwolves extended the lead to 6-0 after claiming three more wins, coming out ahead at the no. 3, no. 6 and no. 4 singles spots.
The three remaining matchups went three sets and, with the overall match already decided, the third sets were all 10-point tiebreakers.
Ana Pico Garcia defeated the previously undefeated Veronika Radlinger in the no. 2 singles spot, posting a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win after fighting throughout the match.
Taylor McLaughlin battled in a back and forth affair, falling 6-7, 7-6, 8-10 at the no. 5 singles slot. Izabella Ismailova also had a battle at no. 1 singles. She dropped a 6-7, 6-3, 6-10 match to her Timberwolf opponent.
From Head Coach Jenn Boehm
"Today was such a special day for our program. We had the opportunity to honor our two seniors, Ana and Izabella. They have meant so much to our program and today's match was another example of how they play with tremendous fight and determination. Ana's win was huge over a girl who has not lost all season and I was so proud of her result today. The team score just doesn't do the match justice in terms of the level we competed at today. We need to focus-in more on the doubles point, but in singles we really came to play. We are ready to take on the GLIAC tournament with the same grit and determination we have shown all season. We know we are capable of really great things."
The Cardinals will enter the 2016 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament as the no. 5 seed with a 7-4 record and will face the no. 4 seeded Ferris State University Bulldogs. The teams will square-off at 6:45 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 28) in the opening round match at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Bulldogs defeated SVSU by a narrow 5-4 score earlier this season on September 18 at Saginaw Valley.
