HILLSDALE, Mich. - After beginning weekend play with a 5-4 win at Wayne State on Saturday, the SVSU women's tennis squad made it a 2-0 weekend after posting a 6-3 road victory over the Hillsdale College Chargers on Sunday afternoon.
The victory improves the team to 7-3 overall and 7-3 in the GLIAC and now gives the Cardinals six straight victories. The six wins in a row are the most since the program rattled-off nine straight to finish the spring of the 2005-06 season.
SVSU was only able to take one of the three doubles matchups, as the duo of Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac improved to 9-1 overall on the season with an 8-5 win at their spot. The Chargers would carry a 2-1 lead into singles play, but that is where the Cardinals stepped up and took control of the match.
Shea Donahue got things started, fighting in a back and forth first set to prevail in a tiebreaker and tie the match at 2-2 with a 7-6, 6-1 win in the no. 3 singles slot. Ana Pico Garcia followed with a win next at no. 2 singles, posting a stellar 7-5, 6-1 win to put the visitors up 3-2. Slonac pushed the lead out to 4-2 after notching a 6-3, 6-3 win at no. 4 singles for her ninth win of the season.
The clinching point would come next, with Taylor McLaughlin finishing-off her no. 5 singles opponent with scores of 6-4, 6-1 to make the score 5-2. Ismailova would battle back from a tough first set and stay alive with a second frame tiebreaker win, forcing a third set and claiming a 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 win in what was a back and forth affair and great tennis to make the score 6-2.
Hillsdale would claim its final point at no. 6 singles, making the final score 6-3 with the overall team result already decided.
From Head Coach Jenn Boehm
"Words are failing me right now, as I am filled with such immense pride for the way this team has progressed over the season. We started out 1-3 and have battled and fought our way to an incredible achievement of six straight wins. Nothing has come easy and these ladies have proven that we are a top team to contend with in this very strong conference. We have Northwood coming up next Sunday and we'll get to honor our two seniors. We will approach that day with tremendous confidence and fight to continue our climb in the standings."
The Cardinals will face the Timberwolves on Sunday (Oct. 23) in the team's final regular season contest. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. and the team will honor seniors Izabella Ismailova and Ana Pico Garcia prior to the match.
