UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU women's tennis team posted its third consecutive victory on Saturday (Oct. 8) afternoon in a homecoming contest over Ashland, 8-1.  The Cardinals cruised to three doubles victories and claimed five of the six singles matchups for the win in what was a cool and windy day outside at the SVSU Tennis Complex.

Ana Pico Garcia and Shea Donahue posted an 8-3 win at no. 1 doubles and that was followed by the no. 2 doubles, featuring Abigail Shonk and Taylor McLaughlin with an 8-4 decision for the 2-0 lead. Next was Danielle Slonac and Mikayla Kazdan, who claimed an 8-2 win. It was Kazdan's first-ever GLIAC start and victory in the lineup for Saginaw Valley.

The no. 3 through no. 6 singles spots posted the first four singles points for the Cards to seal the overall match and make the lead 7-0. Slonac cruised 6-0, 6-1 at the no. 3 spot while McLaughlin claimed a 6-1, 6-0 decision at no. 4. Madeline Miller and Abigail Shonk won at no. 5 and no. 6 singles, posting wins of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.

Garcia, who bumped up to no. 1 singles from her normal no. 2 spot, battled and claimed a solid 6-2, 6-2 win for the team's eighth and final point.

Donahue dropped a close third-set match with a 10-8 tiebreaker at no. 2 singles as the only setback for SV.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"Looking at the weather forecast today we knew the wind could really play a role in our matches. It is a great equalizer in many cases and I thought overall we handled it well. It wasn't always pretty and we had to stay really focused. Ashland also remained positive throughout the match and really battled in the top two singles spots especially. To get our third straight GLIAC win feels great and I was also really happy for Mikayla, who got her first GLIAC start and victory today. We are ready for the next challenge tomorrow versus Walsh!"

Saginaw Valley hosts the Walsh Cavaliers on Sunday morning with an 11:00 a.m. start time. Walsh is coming off an 8-1 defeat at Northwood on Saturday.
