SVSU Tennis Ends Day With a Pair of Losses
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University women’s tennis team dropped two matches yesterday (Mar. 10), as they fell to Indianapolis, 6-3 and Wesleyan (Conn.), 7-2.
Against Indianapolis, freshman Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) defeated Alena Perez-Majuz (Indy) 7-5 and 6-2 while junior Courtney Heileman (East China, Mich./St Clair HS) beat Alex Covington (Indy) 6-3 and 6-0 in the singles competition. The doubles team of Shangguan and sophomore Debra Hammond (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) defeated Indy’s duo 9-7 while team Heileman and senior Jessica Stone (Flushing, Mich./Flushing HS) fell 8-0. Freshmen Lindy Coon (Adrian, Mich./Adrian HS) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) were defeated by Indy in the doubles competition 8-2.
Shangguan would also defeat Genevieve Amelio (Wesleyan) 6-4, 6-4 while Hammond beat Meredith Holmes (Wesleyan) 6-3, 6-3 in the singles competition. The Cardinals were unable to gain a victory over Wesleyan in the doubles competition, as the duos of Shangguan/Hammond and Heileman/Stone both fell by a score of 8-5.
With the two losses, Saginaw Valley falls to 3-11 overall on the season. The Cardinal tennis team will return to action Thursday (Mar. 11), as they take-on Webber International in the final match of the spring season.
