Tennis Slams Tiffin 8-1, Earns Berth Into GLIAC Tournament
TIFFIN, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State
University tennis team won big against Tiffin University on
Saturday 8-1, and earned a spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Tournament.
In singles competition, the Cardinals were undefeated against the
Dragons, as senior Katie Hanover (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS)
won in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, freshman Debra Hammond (Grand Blanc,
Mich./Grand Blanc HS) took three sets to won her match, 6-0, 1-6,
10-8, sophomore Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich./St. Clair HS)
also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, No. 4 singles senior Danielle
Coldren (West Bloomfield, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep HS) took
her match 6-2, 6-1, while sophomore Sarah Campian (Troy, Mich./Troy
HS) didn’t allow a point in her win, 6-0, 6-0, and junior
Jessica Stone (Flushing, Mich./Flushing HS) won 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Hanover and Coldren won 8-4, while Heileman and
Annesa Campian won 8-1. Hammond and Sarah Campian were the only
Cardinal team to lose a match Saturday as the Dragons’ Taylor
Cooper and Ashley Hershner were able to get the win 8-5.
The Cardinals (3-6 overall, 3-6 in the GLIAC) look to take the 8-1
win and use the momentum to help them prepare for the GLIAC
Tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 25-26 in Midland, Mich.
