Lady Cardinals Fall to Lakers in Matchup of Top-20 Teams

ALLENDALE - In a matchup of national top-20 teams, the #18 Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team traveled to Allendale, Michigan to face-off against the third-ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers in a matchup between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  The Lakers would put the pressure on SVSU while displaying solid defense in posting a 2-0 league victory.

The first half featured no scoring and the game would go into the halftime break, 0-0.  The Lakers had 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes, putting six of those on goal.  The Cards had a pair of shots and both were on goal.

The second frame had the identical number of shots for both teams, but at the 73rd minute Grand Valley was able to capitalize and put one on the board for a 1-0 lead.  The Lakers added another score at the 86:20 mark as well, extending the lead out at 2-0.

Saginaw Valley goalkeeper Claire Spleth had the pressure on all afternoon, facing 22 total shots and 11 on goal.  Spleth made nine saves on the day, suffering her first loss of the 2014 season.  Her record now stands at 8-1-2.

Of SVSU's four shots, three were on goal with Stefanie Klug posting two of those and Holly Laser the other.

The Lady Cardinals' record is now 8-1-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the GLIAC.  They do not play until next Sunday (10/19), when the squad travels to Walsh University for a 1:00 pm match.
