Saginaw Valley Defeats Northwood, 2-1 in Overtime

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated Northwood University, 2-1 today (Oct. 2) in overtime.

The Timberwolves took an early 1-0 advatage over the Cardinals in the first half when they scored the only goal of the half off a free kick on the left side of the field.  Saginaw Valley tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore Andrea Grove (Farmington, Mich.) found the back of the net from 20 yards out off a pass from Olivia Perrin (Cadillac, Mich.).

Neither team would score in the remainder of regulation time sending the game into overtime. Grove scored her second goal of the game and her first game winner just five minutes into overtime off a pass from Charley Porter (Midland, Mich.) allowing the Cardinals to go on to a 2-1 victory. Goaltender Laura Ivezaj (Rochester Hills, Mich.) started in net for Saginaw Valley and picked up her fourth win of the season saving four shots.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 4-4-1 overall on the season, and 3-4-1 in the GLIAC, while Northwood falls to 4-5-0 overall on the season, and 3-5-0 overall. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 7) when they return home to take on Ferris State. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
