ASHLAND, Ohio - The 24th ranked SVSU women's basketball team traveled to face second ranked Ashland University in a battle of top GLIAC teams on Thursday (Dec. 8) night. After jumping out to a huge lead and halftime advantage, the Eagles would end up claiming the victory in the matchup of top-25 teams, 101-50.
From there, Ashland scored 16 straight points to make its lead 21-4. The Eagles would close out the opening quarter with a 30-9 edge.
AU outscored SVSU by a 24-6 margin in the second quarter, making it to halftime leading by a 54-15 score. The six points in the frame for the Cardinals came on baskets from Emily Wendling, Grace Whelan and two free throws from Anna Hall.
The Cardinals opened the third quarter scoring with a few layups from Wendling and four free throws and a three-pointer from Katelyn Carriere, making the score 65-28 with 5:42 to play in the third. SV scored 22 points in the frame and the Eagles would score 26, making the score 80-37 after the third.
Ashland closed out the contest and sealed the victory after registering a 21-13 edge in the fourth quarter, claiming the 101-50 win.

Wendling was named the Meijer Player of the Game for SVSU, posting a team-high 18 points and team-best five rebounds. She added two assists in the effort while shooting 9-of-14 from the floor.
Carriere was the only other Cardinal in double-digures, adding 13 points with a pair of rebounds.
Halee Nieman added five points with three rebounds.
Hall and Whelan each matched the team-best five boards while Hannah Settingsgaard led the team with four assists.
Ashland shot 51.3% from the floor and the Cardinals were 31.4%.
SVSU committed 26 turnovers, leading to 33 AU points. The Eagles had 14 turnovers.
The Eagles had a 50-26 edge in points in the paint and posted a 49-30 advantage on the glass.
The Cardinals continue on the road and play at Tiffin University on Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon. The Dragons (3-4, 1-2 GLIAC) are coming off a 79-76 overtime victory at home over Wayne State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
