Lady Cardinals Fall To Rival Northwood, 76-52
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to the visiting Northwood University Timberwolves Saturday night (Feb. 6) by a score of 76-52. The loss drops SVSU's overall record to 4-17 on the season with a 2-14 mark in the GLIAC Conference. Northwood improves to 11-9 overall on the season, holding a 7-9 record in conference play.
SVSU entered halftime down by a score of 50-27. The Lady Cardinals jumped out in front right away, leading by thee after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Marah Kyle (Bluffton, Ind.). The Timberwolves would gain the lead at the 19:02 mark. Northwood would extend the lead to as much as 26 points three different times in the opening 20 minutes. Freshman forward Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) led the Lady Cardinals offensively in the first half, scoring 11 points.
Kennedy, who was selected as the Meijer "Player of the Game", finished with a team high 22 points and a team high six rebounds. The 22 points marks the first 20-plus point performance of her career. Kyle and freshman center Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) each added eight points in the game, while senior guard Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) netted seven in the contest.
The Lady Cardinals will return to action Thursday (Feb. 11), when they travel to take-on the Ashland University Eagles in a 5:30 pm contest. SVSU will also face Tiffin University on Saturday (Feb. 13). Tip-off for that game is set for 1:00 pm.
