Lady Cardinals Defeat Lewis, Move To 2-1


ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team opened its road schedule by defeating Lewis University in a non-conference game Saturday (Nov. 28) by a score of 69-64.  The win moves the Lady Cardinals to 2-1 on the young season the Flyers remain winless for the 2009-10 campaign at 0-3. 

Lewis started the game hot, coming-out and grabbing an early 8-0 lead in the contest and leading at the half, 30-23.  SVSU would come back to take a lead it would not relinquish at 42-40 at the 11:10 mark in the second half.  From there, the Cardinal lead would extend to a game-high 12 with 4:38 left in the contest before finishing-out for the win.

Junior forward Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) paced SVSU offensively with 20 points on 8-13 shooting from the floor.  Fellow junior forward Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) had 14 points for the Cardinals.  Junior guard Tasha Balls (Bridgeport, Mich./Buena Vista HS) was the only other SVSU player to reach double-figures for the night, as she contributed 10 points to the victory.  Freshman forward Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) had a game-high eight rebounds in the contest while adding seven points and freshman guard Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) had nine points and six boards.

SVSU will continue on the road with a contest at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Monday (Nov. 30) in another non-conference game against a Great Lakes Valley Conference school.
