SVSU Track & Field Hosts Day One of Jet's Pizza Invitational

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University track & field team opened competition at the Jet's Pizza Invitational on Friday (Jan. 27), posting a solid first day of events at the SVSU Fieldhouse.

In the 60 meter dash for the women, Domonique Smith sealed a spot in Saturday's finals after finishing third in the prelims with a time of 7.94.

For the men, Tristan Fackelman claimed a first place finish in the 5,000 meter run, posting a personal best time of 14:58.24. Teammate Timmy Kimball clocked-in with a time of 15:18.27, good enough for a third place showing and the best time of his young career in the indoor event.

The 60 meter dash prelims saw a pair of Cardinals qualify for the finals on Saturday. Tra'Von Phillips finished with the second best mark with a time of 6.99 while Landon Lyons was seventh with a showing of 7.13 seconds. Phillips's mark bests his best mark of 7.01 seconds and Lyons's mark matched his best.

A trio of SVSU runners qualified for the 200 meter finals. Leading the way was Juan Bowers, who finished fourth in the prelims with a time of 22.36 seconds. Phillips was next in the fifth spot with a time of 22.61 seconds. Lyons was seventh in the 200 as well, crossing the line in 22.79 seconds.

Jullane Walker was fourth in the long jump. Walker leapt to a distance of 6.80 meters. 

Ben Morrow was sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.70 meters.

In the pole vault, Jacob Kulhanek finished third with a mark of 4.26 meters. Teammates Sebastian Behme and Chase Field finished in a tie for fifth, crossing the bar at a height of 4.11 meters. Both Kulhanek and Field's marks tied their best marks in their young careers.

Sam Black competed in the first day of the heptathlon. He registered 731 points with a first place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.92 meters. He added 625 points in the shot put (12.30m), 619 in the long jump (6.15m) and another 739 in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.42 seconds. 

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 28), as SVSU rounds-out a big second day at the event. The full schedule of events can be found here.
