UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals Swimming and Diving team concluded their first weekend for the 2016-17 season welcoming in the University of Findlay for a dual meet on Saturday (Oct. 15). The Cardinals performed well against the Oilers despite having a short time to recover from the prior meet against Alma College.

The Cardinals began the day with a victory in the Women's 200yd Medley Relay. The team of Amanda Thielen, Lydia Mattar, Alexa Bloom, and Melanie Soenksen led the way with a time of 1:47.82. The Men's team would also come away with the victory in the 200yd Medley with a time of 1:36.14. Both victories gave SVSU early points over the Oilers.

Saginaw Valley continued the winning ways into the individual heats. SVSU would place first in the next eight events, growing their points lead further. The Cardinals received a pair of victories from Amanda Thielen and Jayden Hutchinson in the 1000yd Freestyle. Hutchinson also placed first in the 200yd Freestyle (1:45.12), the 500yd Freestyle (4:53.93) and second in the 200yd Fly events.

Shaun Yap provided victories in the 100yd Breaststroke (58.31 seconds), the 200yd Breaststroke (2:09.74), and was a member of the 200yd Medley relay team taking first place early in the meet.

SVSU's Rebeca Martinez placed first in both of her heats in the pool. The junior swam to a time of 2:13.80 for victory in the 200yd Fly while taking first in the 100yd Fly with a time of 1:00.44.

The Cardinals performed very well in the diving events. SVSU took first, second and third in Men's and Women's 1m and 3m diving. Maxwell Buxton finished first in the one meter (253.95 points) and the three meter diving events (245.90 points) while Wilhemina Francisco grabbed another pair of victories on the diving boards for the Cardinals.

Dominance on the diving boards and key performances from Thielsen, Hutchinson and Martinez gave Saginaw Valley their second win of the Swimming & Diving Season. The Women beat the Oilers, 180 to 109 while the Men finished ahead of Findlay with a 184-107 score.

From Head Coach Bruce Zimmerman:

"Today's meet against Findlay was a great competition for SVSU Swimming & Diving.  On paper this competition had the potential of being a very close meet for both the men and women. In the pool, it was not close at all. Both the men and women's teams showed a lot of fight and grit throughout the competition and dominated in almost every aspect of the meet. Coming off of limited rest after a great victory against Alma College on Friday night, the team came out today fired up and ready to compete. The weekend was a great start to our season and we are looking forward to continued improvement as the season progresses."

 Up next...

The Cardinals Swimming & Diving team travels to the Upper Peninsula for a pair of meets with Northern Michigan University on Friday (Oct. 28) at 6:00 pm and then a triple meet with the Wildcats and Grand Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Noon.
