Softball makes it eight straight victories with Saturday sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The SVSU softball team ran its winning streak to eight games after registering a sweep at Ohio Dominican University on Saturday (Apr. 1) afternoon. The Cardinals claimed the victory in game one by a 7-3 count and closed-out for the sweep with an 8-1 win in the nightcap.

Game One

SVSU took a 4-0 lead in the opener, going for three runs in the top of the 2nd and another in the 3rd to account for the runs. Aubree Mouthaan had a solo home run in the second and that would be followed later by a two-RBI double from Lauren Bachert, scoring Kennedi Thomas and Becky Corbett. The third-inning run came via a Mouthaan RBI single that pushed Meredith Rousse across for the run.

The Panthers scored a single run in the home half of the 5th, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

The Cardinals responded with three more in the top of the 7th, pushing the leaad out to 7-1. Mouthaan added her third RBI of the game, scoring Evy Lobdell from third with the sacrifice fly. A Julia Miller RBI groundout then plated Rousse and the team's final run came when Courtney Reeves scored on a passed ball. 

Ohio Dominican would add two more runs in the bottom of the 7th, but the Cards held on for the 7-3 game one win.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Mouthaan went 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals. Her solo shot was her fifth long ball of the season. 
  • Rousse was 3-3 with two runs, adding a walk. She had a double as one of the three hits.
  • Corbett also had a pair of hits, going 2-3 with a run and walk.
  • Bachert had a double and two RBI.
  • Corbett added two stolen bases while Rousse had one.
  • SVSU out-hit the Panthers, 9-4.

On the Mound

  • Samantha Willman improved to 7-3 overall while earning the complete game victory. She struck-out 12 batters, allowing three runs on four hits despite walking nine batters.

Game Two

The Cardinal offense remained hot in the second game, as SVSU had nine more hits in the contest. Playing as the home team, Saginaw Valley took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Rousse knocked-in Lobdell and Danielle Hamilton with a double for the first two runs. Rousse then scored on an error, as did Corbett for the third and fourth runs.

Hamilton made the lead 5-0 in the 2nd inning, ripping an RBI double that scored Breanna Dinsmoore for the run. 

After the Panthers notched their only run of the game in the top of the 3rd, the Cardinals responded with one of their own on a Dinsmoore RBI fielder's choice, scoring Corbett for the 6-1 edge.

SVSU added a pair of runs in the home half of the 5th, making the score 8-1. That would be the final count. The runs came on a Bachert RBI double to score Corbett and a Dinsmoore RBI single to push Bachert across.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Of the team's nine hits, five were doubles.
  • Two of those were off the bat of Hamilton, who went 2-3 with an RBI, run scored and walk.
  • Bachert had two hits with a double, RBI and run scored.
  • Rousse also had two knocks, adding two RBI and a run.
  • Dinsmoore had a hit, two RBI and a run.
  • Corbett was 1-1 with three runs and two walks.

On the Mound

  • Anna Conard (5-1) went the distance in game two, allowing the single run on eight hits in the contest, striking-out seven batters. She walked only one Panther. The seven strikeouts matches her career-high, which was earlier this season against Drury.

Saginaw Valley continues on its Ohio road swing, playing at Ashland University on Sunday. First pitch is set for Noon against the Eagles. The Cardinals have won 14 of their past 15 games and are a perfect 6-0 in GLIAC play.
