Cardinal Softball Splits with Wayne State University, 0-2, and 6-0
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw
Valley softball team split with Wayne State University today (Apr.
19) 0-2, and 6-0.
GAME ONE
Saginaw Valley had three hits in the first game. Their first hit
came when senior Marsha Beaubien (Alpena, Mich. / Alpena HS) hit a
single through the right side of the field. The next two hits came
in the sixth inning with a lead off double from Angela Kaiser
(Waterford, Mich. / Our Lady of the Lakes)and a single to third
base from Jessica Anhel (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS).
In the top of the sixth Wayne State scored two runs, one unearned
to take the lead.
Jade Fulton would take the loss throwing all seven innings. Fulton
had seven strikeouts and gave up only four hits.
GAME TWO
The Cardinals scored the first run of the game when senior Nicole
Fick (Columbiaville, Mich. / Lapeer West HS) hit a homerun out to
left center in the fourth inning. Saginaw Valley scored two more
runs in the fifth inning. Senior Vanessa Briggs (Freeland, Mich. /
Freeland HS) lead off for the Cardinals with a single up the
middle. Billi Hopenner (Hemlock, Mich. / Hemlock HS) pinch ran for
her. Kaiser singles and advanced all the way to third on a throwing
error by the shortstop, Hopenner also scored on the error. Stacy
Kraatz (Howell, Mich. / Hartland HS) got on base in a
fielder’s choice play, Kaiser scored on the hit.
In the top of the sixth innings Saginaw Valley scored two more
runs to put them ahead 6-0. Kaiser started off the innings with a
single through the left side of the field. Kraatz hit a double to
left center to score Kaiser. Senior Jessica Anhel (Oxford, Mich. /
Oxford HS) doubled to right field scoring Kraatz for the final runs
of the game.
Junior Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart HS) picked up the win
for the Cardinals pitching her second complete game of the season.
Bowlby struck out two and gave up only four hits. With the win she
improves her record to 8-1.
With the split Saginaw Valley is 31-9 overall on the season and
18-4 in the GLIAC, while Wayne State is 32-11 overall on the season
and 15-4 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action on
Saturday April 25 when they travel to Ferris State University.
First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1:00PM.
