Men's Soccer wins third straight with shutout at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, IA -- The Cardinal Men's Soccer team won its third straight match after a 2-0 shutout victory at Upper Iowa University on Sunday (Nov. 3) afternoon, using a goal in each half to claim the win. 

Saginaw Valley got on the board first when Connor Rutz found the back of the net at the 33' mark to put the visitors up 1-0.

In the first 45 minutes, SVSU had eight shots compared to five for the Peacocks. Each team had a pair of corner kicks as well.

The Cards tacked-on another goal in the 79th minute to push the lead to 2-0, using a Kairo Coore goal to help preserve the two-goal shutout after the defense held strong.

  • Saginaw Valley finished with 14 shots and Upper Iowa had a dozen.
  • Seven of those 14 shots were on-goal and the Peacocks had five on-goal in the match.
  • Damon Favero (1-2-0) picked up his first victory of the season in the shutout effort.
  • Coore had two shots, both going on-goal for SV.
  • Alex Gloshen had a team-high four shots with one on-goal.
  • The Cardinals finished with six corner kicks and Upper Iowa had three.

"Today was always going to be difficult. We had some senior starters out and only had 14 players available for the day. Upper Iowa did a fantastic job in making it very difficult for us. Fortunately, a few moments of clever play opened up the UIU defense and we slotted them home."

Saginaw Valley rounds-out the regular season on Thursday (Nov. 7) at Northwood University in the regular season finale. First kick is set for 2:00 p.m. in Midland. The Cardinals are currently third in the league standings an are still in the hunt for the GLIAC regular season championship and first round bye in the league's postseason tournament.
