ASHLAND, Ohio - The SVSU men’s soccer
team advanced to the 2008 GLIAC soccer finals on Saturday after
defeating top seeded Ashland by a score of 4-2 today (Nov. 6). The
Cardinals will face the winner of the Tiffin/Northwood game later
this evening.
Things started out a little rough for the Cardinals as they fell
behind 2-0 in the first thirteen minutes of the game to the Eagles,
but a Kevin Fox (Flushing, Mich.) goal helped cut the deficit to
2-1 in the 23rd minute and got the offense going. Brent Walker
(Owosso, Mich.) would net one of his two goals of the evening in
the 32nd minute on a pass from Ryan Seelhoff (Owosso, Mich.) to
knot the score at 2-2. Just five minutes later Matt Wiegand
(Dearborn, Mich.)found the net on a ball that was mishandled by the
Ashland keeper to give the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage. Walker would
give SVSU an insurance goal in the 68th minute to end the scoring
at 4-2.
SVSU moves to 8-9 on the season and Ashland falls to 15-3. The
Cardinal will play Tiffin at 7 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 8) on the campus
of Ashland University. The Cardinals were 0-2 against Tiffin during
the regular season.
In the win, Walker received his fifth yellow card of the season,
and senior Daniel Wragg (Kirton Lindsey, England/Delta College)
received two yellow cards and will have to sit out of
Saturday’s final.
