Motte's 70 paces SVSU in round two of Motor City Invitational

DEARBORN, Mich. - The SVSU men's golf team shaved-off eight strokes from Sunday's round one score, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals finished in a tie for second place at the 2016 Motor City Invitational, hosted by Wayne State University at the TPC of Michigan Course.

Saginaw Valley posted rounds of 304 and 296 to finish three strokes off the pace with their total tally of 600. The Cards with Bellarmine, which fired the best score of Monday with a 295 in the runner-up spot. Grand Valley State claimed the event with a final score of 597. SVSU had the second best round on both days.

Mason Motte had a stellar second round to pace the Cardinals, as he fired a two-under par score of 70 on Monday to jump to a tie for first place after his opening round of 76 had him tied for 15th. Motte was then in a playoff with Hillsdale's Joel Pietila, but would fall on the first hole when Pietila posted a birdie to claim the individual medalist honor. His 70 was one of just three under-par scores in the event and was tied for best on Monday.

Austin Carter shot a second round 72 (E) for the second 18 holes, finishing tied for 7th overall after his overall score of 150 (78-72, +6). He was tied by teammate Dustin Pumford, who shot rounds of 74-76 for his 150 and was the low man in round one.

Jared Lyons and Ryan Peruski each shot a round two score of 78. Lyons posted scores of 76-78 (+10) to tie for 20th while Peruski had 78-78 (+12) and finished tied for 26th.

The runner-up finish was the second straight for the Cardinals, who also finished in the number two spot at the 2016 Kyle Ryman Memorial Tournament. SVSU finished in the top-five in four of their five events for the fall. 

The 2016 Motor City Invitational is the team's last tournament of the fall, as the team kicks-off the spring section of its schedule on March 18-19 at the SVSU Invitational, hosted by the Cardinals at the Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Kentucky.
