SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. - The SVSU men's golfers laid claim to their first victory of the 2013-14 season at the GLIAC North Invitational, which was held at the HawksHead Golf Links in South Haven, Michigan.
After leading Grand Valley State by just two strokes after a first round 286 (-2), the Cardinals shot a four-over 292 to seal a seven-stroke victory over tournament runner-up Malone University (293-292, 585).
Junior Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich.) rebounded from a tough day one on the course to card a 69 (-3), which was the low round of the day. He finished the tournament tied for sixth place with a 145 (+1).
Senior Adam Hansen (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) followed-up his first day 71 with a 73 to finish at even-par for the weekend. That put Hansen in a tie for third overall.
Junior Carter Marsh (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS), who fired a first round 69, followed with a 77 on day two to finish in a tie for ninth place with a 146 (+2) total.
Senior Eric Gandy (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) shot a one-over 73 to score for SVSU in round two after a tough first round.
Junior Chris Weir (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) had a 77 on day two for Saginaw Valley a day removed from firing a two-under 70. Weir finished tied for 13th place in the event.
Every SVSU golfer finished 26th or better on the weekend.
The Cardinal golfers return to action Sunday (Sept. 29), as they travel to Calumet, Illinois to participate in the first NCAA Regional Tournament.
