UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University men's golfer Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich.) has been selected to compete in the International Golf Initiative (IGI) Series in St. Andrews, Scotland as part of a USA Athletes International (USAAI) team from August 12 through August 21, 2013.
"He is a deserving young man, not just for his talent with golf, but even more so as an ambassador for DII college golf," commented SVSU men's golf coach Joe Vogl.
The USAAI team, composed of 12 select athletes from across the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will travel to Scotland to compete in a series of matches against a local Scotland club. Players from across the conference were recommended for the team based on two key elements: their athletic ability and their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner.
The team will be led by Tiffin University golf coach and 2012 GLIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year Darby Roggow. "I am excited to lead such a fine group of young men and I know this will be an experience that they will all remember for a lifetime," stated coach Roggow.
In addition to competing, the team will also take time to tour Scotland, learning all about the history and culture of the historic country.
USA Athletes International is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition. With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level.
"He has the personality, the temperament and the competitiveness to represent extremely well, our country, the Great Lakes Bay Region, SVSU, our Athletic Department and the Golf Program, and maybe more importantly, his family!" said coach Vogl.
There will be a golf outing fundraiser on Saturday, May 11th at Valley View Farm Golf Course in Saginaw to help support the expenses of the trip. For more information on the outing and how to register, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call (989) 781-0040.
