Skidmore Leads Cardinals with Third Place Finish, Team Seventh Overall

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf team finished in seventh place at the Ashland Invitational. The Cardinals recorded 321 (+33) on day one and backed it up with a much-improved 309 (+21) on day two to finish at 630 (+54). The University of Findlay took the team title with a 598 total (+22) total.

The Cardinals were led by red-shirt freshman Micah Skidmore (Saginaw, Mich.) who tied for third place overall with a four-over-par total of 148. Skidmore was tied for fourth after day one with an impressive 75 (+3) on a cool, windy day. He followed it up with a one-over-par 73 on Sunday to jump to third place, four shots behind the individual medalist. The top-5 finish is Skidmore's third of the 2011-12 season.

Freshman Wyatt Drost (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) bounced back in round two with a two-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for 27th place with a 156 (+12) total. Drost carded a first round 82 in the tough conditions.

Sophomore Chris Weir (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) finished tied for 50th position in his first start of the season. Weir carded a 79 (+7) on Saturday and finished up the tournament with an 80 (+8) on Sunday to finish at 161 overall.

The Cardinal lineup was rounded out by Dustin Vogl (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western HS) and Jeremy Schultz (Saginaw, Mich./Michigan Lutheran Seminary) who finished in 67th and 72nd place, respectively. Vogl recorded rounds of 86 and 80, while Schultz posted 85 and 83 at the par-72, 6,610 yard Country Club of Ashland layout.

This concludes the official, regular season portion of the SVSU golf schedule. The Saginaw Valley golfers will participate in a GLIAC preview tournament next weekend hosted by Ashland University. The qualifiers for NCAA Super Regionals in Jefferson City, Missouri will be announced later this week.
