PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf team finished in third place over the weekend at the Lake Erie College Spring Invitational, which was held at the Par 71 - 6,487 yard Madison Country Club.
The Cardinals shot a first round 311 and were eight strokes back of tournament leader Findlay, which shot a 303, followed by Wayne State with a 305. SVSU followed that round with a 307 on day two, finishing with a two-day total of 618, 15 strokes off the pace. Findlay held on to shoot a 603 total to claim the tournament by one stroke over Wayne State, which shot a second round 299.
Nate Kelly (Suttons Bay, Mich.) was the top finisher for SVSU, posting a 147 (+5) to fall one stroke shy of individual medalist Matt Jones of Findlay. Adam Hansen (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western HS) finished in a tie for 23rd place after tallying a 156 (+14) in the event. Eric Gandy (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) shot a 157 (+15) to tie for 26th and Mike Horn (Clarkston, Mich.) fired a 158 (+16) to finish in a tie for 29th.
The Cardinals will be back in action on April 23, when they compete in the GLIAC Preview Tournament, which will be hosted by Ferris State University at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
