Saginaw Valley Falls to Urbana University in Overtime, 82-77
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of
the season today (Nov. 30) when the Cardinals were defeated in
overtime by Urbana University, 82-77.
The Cardinals trailed by three at halftime. Saginaw Valley
was led by senior Adam Gries (Fremont,
Ohio / Ross HS), who had 10 points and grabbed three rebounds, and
Meijer Player of the Game Greg Foster
(Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS), who had seven points and one
rebound. Senior Avery Stephenson
(Romulus, Mich.) added six points and junior Keithan Jackson
(Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) had five points and
pulled down eight rebounds as well in the opening frame.
Saginaw Valley would not gain the lead back until four minutes
left in regulation. Foster led the Cardinals with 14 points
while Jackson, Stephenson, and Chris Webb (Saginaw,
Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) all added six points. The score would
be knotted at 67 with 1:43 left and forced into overtime.
The Cardinals fought a hard battle in overtime, but it would not
be enough. Jackson had eight points for Saginaw Valley and
grabbed eight rebounds in the extra five minutes. The
Cardinals were 2-for-4 on three point shots in overtime.
Saginaw Valley was led by Foster, who ended the night with 22
points. Jackson posted his third straight double-double with 19
points and 17 rebounds. Stephenson ended the night with 13
points, and Gries had 12 points and six rebounds for the
Cardinals.
With the loss Saginaw Valley drops to 3-1 overall on the season,
while Urbana improves to 5-2 for the 2009-10 campaign. The
Cardinals return to action Thursday (Dec. 3) in their first GLIAC
game of the season when they take on the reigning Division II
National Champions, the University of Findlay. Tipoff is set
for 8:00pm.
