Cardinals Fall to RedHawks, 70-48
OXFORD, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team dropped their second exhibition game of the 2009 season to Miami University today (Nov. 8), 70-48.
The Cardinals got out to a fast start, going up by as many as 15 points with 5:35 left in the first half of action. Saginaw Valley would enter the locker room with a 28-25 advantage as senior guard Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.) led the Cardinals with seven points, seven rebounds and three assists in the first half. As a team, the Cardinals connected on five-of-eight shots from behind the three point line.
The RedHawks came out strong in the second half as they went on an eight point run, taking the lead 33-28. Saginaw Valley would respond and cut the RedHawk advantage to three points, however it was enough as the Cardinals were outscored 45-20 in the second half. Stephenson led Saginaw Valley overall with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal. Junior forward Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) ended the night with 11 points and one rebound while sophomore guard Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) netted 10 points and pulled down four rebounds for the Cardinals in the loss.
Saginaw Valley will return to action as they host Adrian for their 2009-10 season home opener Sunday afternoon (Nov. 15). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 pm in the James E O'Neil Arena.
