Cardinals Fall to Wayne State, 41-27

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team fell to Wayne State today (Oct. 30) 41-27 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up for the first time since 1991, a span of 16 contests.

Saginaw Valley had an explosive start in their first play of the game as Meijer "Player of the Game", sophomore runningback Ronnie Lark (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) gave the Cardinals good field position on a 76-yard run before finding the endzone two plays later from one-yard out.  The Warriors would respond with two touchdowns within the next six minutes, giving them a 14-7 advantage entering the second quarter.

Wayne State would add a successful 27-yard field goal to give them a 10-point advantage over the Cardinals with 9:13 remaining on the first half game clock.  Saginaw Valley would cut the Warrior lead to three, 17-14, when Lark added his second touchdown of the game on a one-yard rush into the endzone just before the half expired.  Lark, who led the Cardinals offensively, ended the afternoon with a season-high and career-high 164 yards on the ground.

The third quarter was a battle for Saginaw Valley as the Warriors found paydirt from 17-yards out to increase their lead to ten, however the Cardinals would respond when freshman quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) found senior wide receiver Andrew Beaver (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Dearborn HS) in the endzone on a 25-yard completion.  With a three-point advantage, Wayne State would add a field goal followed by touchdown late in the third quarter to give them a 34-21 lead.

After the Warriors added a nine-yard touchdown, Saginaw Valley would find the endzone for their final time of the contest as Jennings would again find Beaver in the endzone, this time from 15-yards out.  The Cardinals would be unable to find the endzone again on the afternoon, falling 41-27.

Beaver ended the game with two touchdowns on six receptions for 56 yards.  He now sits just four catches away from breaking the single season school record for catches of 66.  Junior runningback Brandon Hayes (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) added 52 yards off five carries while junior wide receiver Mike Peterson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) added 35 yards on two receptions.

The Saginaw Valley defense was led overall by line backer Josh Fallon (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central HS) who ended the game with 12 tackles while senior Rick Evans and sophomore Grant Caserta (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS) both added 11.  Sophomore Anthony Iacovoni (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) forced one fumble and had one sack for a loss of three yards, ending the game with three tackles.

With the loss, Saginaw Valley falls to 3-6 overall on the season and 3-5 in the GLIAC while Wayne State moves to 7-2 overall on the season and 6-2 in conference play.  The Cardinals will return to action next weekend (Nov. 6) when they travel to Marquette, Mich. to take on the Northern Michigan University Wildcats.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
