Cardinals Fall 14-11 to Indianapolis

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University football team dropped a 14-11 Homecoming day game to Indianapolis on Saturday (Sept. 27).

Indianapolis got on the scoreboard first in the second quarter when Lance Lasker hit Kevin Sanford on a 78 yard pass to give the Greyhounds an early7-0 advantage. The Cardinals would cut into that lead when Jeremy Burr (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) booted a 42 yard field goal to make the score 7-3. UIndy would extend their lead in the third quarter when Lasker would throw his second touchdown on the day to help the Greyhounds go up 14-3. The Cardinals would finally get things going in the fourth quarter when Dan Stiefel (Emmett, Mich./Stevenson) would find a wide-open Galen Stone (Swartz Creek, Mich.) for a seven yard TD pass. SVSU would tack on two more when Stiefel hit Carl Grimes (Detroit, Mich. /MSU) in the endzone for the two-point conversion to cut the Greyhound lead to three points at 14-11. UIndy tried to extend the lead on a 29 yard field goal attempt, but Bryan Klobucar (Hudsonville, Mich.) got a hand on the ball to keep SVSU’s hope alive. The Cardinals last attempts at the endzone would come up short as Stiefel was sacked on back-to-back plays as time expired.

The defense was lead by John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich. /Midland Dow) who had 15 tackles to lead the trio of Cardinal linebackers who recorded double digit tackles. Senior Mike LeVand (Grandville, Mich.) and Jason Kelly (Auburn, Mich. /Bay City Western) each recorded 12 tackles. LeVand also forced and came up with a fumble recovery.

The Cardinals will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 4) when they travel to Northern Michigan University to take on the Wildcats. Kick off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
