Womens Soccer Selected to Finish Third in GLIAC
BAY CITY, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University womens soccer team was selected to finish third in the annual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason coaches poll. SVSU recorded 35 points, finishing behind Tiffin University (2nd, 37 pts.) and Grand Valley State University (1st, 49 pts.) in the voting. The Lady Cardinals finished last season third in the GLIAC after a runner-up showing in the 2008 conference tournament. They lost to GVSU, 2-0, in the title match. SVSU looks to improve upon their 2008 regular season record of 8-6 and, once again, challenge the reigning conference champions, Grand Valley State University.

EUGENE, Ore. - The Saginaw Valley State University mens track and field team was represented at the 2009 USATF Junior Nationals by freshman Nick Ekel (Elsie, Mich. / Ovid Elsie HS) who finished in third place with a time of 31:36.16 in the 10,000 meter run, beating his previous best by 28 seconds. The Saginaw Valley State University softball team continued its hot play in the 2009 GLIAC Tournament to capture the Cardinals first back-to-back championships since 1990 when the school won its third straight championship. Cardinals Take 14th at Great Lakes Regional
NOBLESVILLE, Ind.- The SVSU golf team traveled to Indiana (April 18-19) to compete in the Great Lakes Regional #3, a two-round tournament featuring 19 teams. The Cardinals were unable to get into a groove and came home with a 14th place finish, shooting a 632. Ferris came in on top with a score of 598, Indianapolis finished second with a 604, Grand Valley came in third with a 605 and Bellarmine shot 608 and came in fourth.

Cardinals Shoot Well at the Jewell
GEORGETOWN, KY. The SVSU golf team traveled to Kentucky (April 4-5) to compete in the Jewell, a two round tournament featuring 20 teams, the largest the Cardinals have competed in so far this spring. Although the golfers put up there best scores of the season, none of the Cardinals shot over 79 for a round, they were unable to do enough to finish in the top ten and came home with a score of 596, 20 strokes over par, and a twelfth place finish. Ferris State finished in first with an 11 under par 565, good enough to separate them by only two strokes from both Grand Valley and the University of Indianapolis, who both shot 567 and tied for second. Fourth place went to Wayne State University who shot an even par 576.

FALMOUTH, KY. - The SVSU mens golf team traveled to Kentucky to compete in the E-Z Go Spring Classic, a two round tournament featuring 13 teams, this past weekend. The Cardinals were unable to find a rythym on either day of the contest and finished in 12th place with a score of 611, 35 strokes over par. The University of Indianapolis rolled to an easy victory over the competition and finished at three under par with a score of 573, 10 strokes ahead of second place Grand Valley. Bellarmine finished in third at 588, and Northern Kentucky came in with a 593, putting them in fourth.

Williams Named GLIAC Player of the Week for Second Time this Season
BAY CITY, Mich - Senior guard Dante Williams was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the second time this season after he averaged 28.0 ppg over the weekend helping SVSU to victories over Ashland and Tiffin. Williams shot 19-of-39 from the floor, including 13-of-29 from behind the arc, dished out 12 assists and pulled down five boards. Against AU, Williams tied a school record with eight three-point baskets, setting a career high in points with 35. He followed that up with 21 points against TU, adding five more from behind the three-point line. Williams now stands just nine made three-point baskets from breaking his own SVSU season record of 71.

Dante Williams Named GLIAC North Player of the Week
BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valleys Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./East Tenn State Univ.) was named GLIAC North Player of the Week for his play on the court last week. Williams, a senior guard helped led the Cardinals to a 1-1 mark last week. In Thursdays contest against Wayne State, Williams notched 18 of his game high 24 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and six-of-six from the charity stripe. In Saturdays game against Northwood, he dropped in 27 points on 7-of-16 shooting and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line for the game, including eight-of-eight down the stretch in the second half. For the week, Williams averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists per game last week.

SVSU to Host "Take a Kid to a Game Day" and "Community Youth Day" This weekend
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. Saginaw Valley State University invites all area children to attend their upcoming football game at noon, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, against the Tiffin University Dragons. Children have the opportunity to experience a college football game as the Cardinals hosts NCAA Footballs eleventh annual Take A Kid to the Game (TAKG) program presented by Coca-Cola and sponsored by other Corporate Champions, AT&T and Pontiac. Kids, ages fourteen and younger, will receive a free ticket with the purchase of a full-priced adult ticket, to watch the Cardinals at Wickes Field. In conjunction with Take a Kid to the Game Day, SVSU will host a free basketball Community Youth Day event in which children in grades K-8 will have a chance to learn skills from basketball coaches Frankie Smith and Shannon Baugh, and athletes from their respective teams at 10:30 a.m. in ONeill Arena.

Mens Soccer Kicks Off 2008 Season

The Cardinals began practice last week marking the start of the 2008 fall season.
