UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Saginaw Valley State University Director of Athletics Mike Watson announced his retirement from the university today, Monday, Dec. 4, effective at the end of 2017.
Watson, 62, has overseen SVSU Athletics since 2007. During that time, Cardinal student-athletes experienced success on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, volleyball and softball programs earned GLIAC conference and/or divisional championships, and qualified for NCAA tournament play, during Watson's tenure. In addition, many SVSU student-athletes earned Academic All-American and All-American honors.
John Decker, SVSU associate vice president of administration and business affairs as well as general counsel, who has been overseeing SVSU Athletics, has been named acting Director of Athletics, effective immediately. Watson has agreed to serve SVSU on a consulting basis, as needed, through June 2018.
"I appreciate Mike Watson's support of our student-athletes and coaches, and his service to the university over the past 10 years," said Donald Bachand, SVSU president.
