February 8, 2012

Objective

To recognize women for their commitment of time, talent and experience in a meaningful way to advance the community – making our region a better place to live, work and dream.

Overview

Twelve great women will be selected from the Great Lakes Bay Region, two from each of the four communities (Saginaw, Midland, Bay and Mount Pleasant).  Also receiving recognition will be four great female students from each of the neighboring institutions of higher education (Saginaw Valley State University, Delta College, Northwood University and Central Michigan University).

“The Great Lakes Bay Region has seen impressive advances in recent years, in large measure because of the passion of local women who work hard at putting our communities first,” said Lisa Kusey-Rechsteiner, general manager of Graff Chevrolet. “This award is meant to honor women who create, encourage and manage all sorts of activities that make our community a better place to live, work and dream. They don’t seek honor or glory, but they deserve it.”

Recognition Program

The Great Women of the Great Lakes Bay Region will receive their awards Wednesday, Feb. 8. A networking reception will begin at 4 p.m. in SVSU’s Curtiss Hall. The program includes a panel discussion on how women can serve as change agents and make a meaningful difference in their communities.  Kelly McMann, music director at Mix 106.3 WGER-FM, will moderate the discussion. The ceremony is open to the public and free of charge, but seating is limited.

Reception guest speakers include:

Lisa Grills, YWCA Executive Director

Esther Wurfel, Former Miss Michigan and Michigan Business Owner

Sara Linsmeier-Wurfel, Press Secretary to Governor Snyder

The honorees also will be publicly recognized during halftime of the women’s basketball game between SVSU and Northwood that begins at 6 p.m. That game is Girl Scout Night, and all girl scouts wearing official Girl Scouts apparel will be admitted free of charge, along with up to two guests each. For others, tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors.
